Gridlock
Currently reading Gridlock by Ben Elton. Before reading this, I wasn't quite familiar with the concept of a gridlock - a traffic situation in which all the vehicles involved are blocking the others in a circular fashion. An excerpt from the book:
Gridlocks had originally been a US phenomenon. They occur when the grids of roads (or spaghetti of roads as they are in towns like London) become jammed at a series of junctions, meaning that cars cannot escape. The jam then feeds back, blocking more junctions and hence causing further jams. The size of the gridlock is dependent only on the number of cars feeding into the jam and how quickly the police can close the roads leading into it
This is a scene from Xiamen, China, which shows a major traffic jam that is approaching complete gridlock. To the left is the small gap in traffic which is preventing a total lock. The situation is much worse in inner city roads, where roads are narrower and manoeuvrability is limited.
On a lighter note, here is an interesting flash game where you have to guide your car (the dark blue block) out of the jam, through the exit to the right.
Fantastic mirror prank!
Just check out this superb prank video - a bit long, but worth every minute. Identical rooms separated by a glass window, and identical twins on either side of the glass - see the people go crazy trying to find out what's wrong! Especially the lady with the glasses near the end of the video ...... :o)
